Katherine Bourdon

As an artist and a musician, Katherine thinks subconsciously in terms of sound quality within each painting. Her work is rooted in her experiences as a musician where repetition of a visual element becomes rhythm, and line and color transform into melody and harmony. Katherine’s paintings, be they landscapes or still lifes become transformed in the process of creation from memory and imagination. The subject matter is examined and interpreted, as she is not interested in direct representation. It is the play of shapes within the composition that speaks to her, and the forms in her paintings are personal symbols and visual metaphors.

Katherine is a native of western Michigan and currently lives in Muskegon. Art and music have always been equal passions, as she taught vocal music in public and private schools in Michigan for more than 30 years before retiring to pursue her art work full time. Through the years, her work has received numerous awards throughout the state of Michigan. Most recently she was awarded the “People Choice Award” at the KIA in Kalamazoo, the Heule Memorial Award at the Festival of Arts Regional Competition at the Grand Rapids UICA, and the Curator’s Choice Award at the MMA Regional/All State Exhibition in Muskegon. Her artwork has been purchased for many private and corporate collections including Steelcase, Midland Convention Center, FMB Headquarters, and West Michigan Symphony.
