Greg Hopkins
Hopkins is celebrated for his intricate, abstract paintings characterized by their sharp, precise edges. His unique artistic process involves the use of tape masks, a technique that allows him to create well-defined lines and complex compositions. This meticulous method involves layering and weaving tape masks with various colors. The tape serves as a tool to control where the paint is applied, ensuring clean and sharp edges, but it also covers the majority of the painting surface for extended periods, sometimes lasting several weeks.
Describing his process, Hopkins states, “I can’t see how well the layers I’m painting today are integrating with the layers covered by tape weeks ago. It's a risky way to work. When I finally peel off all the tape, it’s the first time I get to see the entire composition. Sometimes I’m disappointed, sometimes I’m elated, but I’m always surprised by the result.”
