Jaye Schlesinger
Jaye Schlesinger has an MFA in painting from the University of Michigan. She has worked as a medical illustrator, drawing professor, museum exhibit designer, furniture maker, and, now, a full time painter living in Ann Arbor. She has exhibited extensively and has won numerous awards, including a Pollack/Krasner Foundation Grant. Her work is included in many invitational shows of Contemporary Realism and she has been featured in major national arts publications.
Schlesinger’s subject matter has evolved to focus on common objects. She isolates her subject from its normal context and portrays it in a way that allows it to become symbolic, metaphorical, or provocative. Her aim is to create an ‘object portrait’ rather than a traditional still life composition. Everyday objects can provide a powerful window into the lives that people live.
“That she chooses to take time to carefully observe and to depict the likeness of an object, can be seen in the context of optimism. Things matter. Quiet deliberation is important. Reflection and imagining are springboards to hope.”
